THE FIRST CITY MAYOR

 
YANG BERBAHAGIA DATO' HJ. UMAR BIN HJ. ABU

Yg. Bhg. Dato' Umar bin Haji Abu was born on June 22 1943 in Kg. Durian Daun, Mesjid Tanah, Melaka. Datuk Umar Bin Haji Abu had an illustrious career in the civil service and held various senior positions, including being the first Mayor of Ipoh from 1988 until 1993. After completing his service as Mayor of Ipoh, he was appointed as Director and Chairman of MEASAT Global Berhad on 25th August 1998. He is also the Chairman of the Audit Committee since September 1998 and served as Chairman of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee of MEASAT Global Berhad. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from Universiti Malaya and a Diploma in Development Administration from the University of Birmingham, UK. He also had held the position as Secretary General of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Malaysia before his retirement. He was also a board member of Bougainvillea Club Berhad.

THE SECOND CITY MAYOR

YANG BERBAHAGIA ALLAHYARHAM DATO' ISMAIL B. SHAH BODIN

Allahyarham Dato' Ismail Shah Bodin, known for his easygoing approach among Ipoh City Council staff, was the second Mayor of Ipoh. He was known for making surprise spot checks around the city during his tenure as the second mayor of Ipoh between August 1993 and December 1994. Dato' Ismail was born on July 25, 1939 at Bota Kiri, Parit, Perak. He received his early education in Smk Anderson Ipoh and later went to The Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). He served for 17 months before being posted to the Perak State Agriculture Development Corporation as its general manager on 1st of January 1995. Dato' Ismail Shah Bodin started his career in 1965 as Tapah District Council secretary. The following year, he became the assistant district officer of Kuala Kangsar and subsequently served as Assistant Director Officer of Sungai Siput and Selama before leaving for a course in Japan. Upon his return in 1974, Ismail started the State Agricultural Development Authority and served as its first general manager until 1979 when he became Tapah district officer. From 1983, he was the district officer of Manjung before moving to the then Ipoh Municipal Council as its secretary in 1985. In 1989, he was appointed Taiping Municipal Council president where he served until 1990 before assuming the post of State Land and Mines director where he served until his appointment as mayor. Dato' Ismail Shah Bodin was also very active in volunteer work. He was the chairman of the Perak Red Crescent Society, Perak Scouts Council, Ipoh Orchid Society and Perak Life Saving Society. He also helped to promote the International Orchid Festival. Dato' Ismail Shah Bodin died on 26th June 2010.

THE THIRD CITY MAYOR

YANG BERBAHAGIA DATO' HJ. AHMAD SALEH B. HJ. SARIF

Dato 'Haji Ahmad Saleh Bin Haji Sarif was the third Mayor of Ipoh. He was born on August 9, 1950 in Batu Gajah, Perak. Dato 'Haji Ahmad Saleh has obtained B. Ec (Hons) from Universiti Malaya and a MBA from Miami University, USA. He began serving in the Civil Service on March 20, 1975 as the Assistant Director (Personnel) in the Department of Public Service. Dato 'Haji Ahmad Saleh served as Mayor of Ipoh from 1995 until 1997.

THE FOURTH CITY MAYOR

YANG BERBAHAGIA DATO' HJ. TALAAT B. HJ. HUSAIN

Dato’ Hj. Talaat Bin Hj. Husain was the fourth Mayor of Ipoh. He has served as Mayor of Ipoh from 1998 to 2002. He was born on January 27, 1951 at Simpang Empat, Sitiawan, Perak. Dato' Seri Talaat obtained his early education  his early education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) and he holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Political Science) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Master in Professional Studies (International Planning) from Cornell University, USA and attended the Program Advanced Management at London Business School and Harvard Business School. He joined the Malaysian Civil Service in 1973 and started as an Assistant State Secretary in Penang, and later holding positions in the Prime Minister's Department, National Institute for Public Administration (INTAN), the National Palace and the Ministry of Education. He has also served as Mayor of Ipoh City for two terms before becoming the Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Prior to his retirement he held the position of Secretary General of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. Whilst in the Government Service he held the positions of Chairman of Companies Commission of Malaysia, Board Member of Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation, Malaysian Communication and Multi-Media Corporation and Sepang International Circuit. Dato' Seri Talaat is also an Independent Director of Silver Bird Group Berhad and Konsortium Logistik Berhad. He is also holding position of Chairman of several private limited companies and currently a Board Member of Outward Bound Trust of Malaysia.

THE FIFTH CITY MAYOR

DaTO' Sirajuddin Salleh bin Haji was the fifth Mayor of Ipoh. He has served as Mayor of Manila from 2002 until 2004. Dato' Sirajuddin was born on 27 November 1951 in Kg. Georgetown, Silver. He has graduated B. Econs (Hons) from University and MPA from the University of Sourthern Caliifornia. Datuk Sirajuddin began serving in the Civil Service in 1974 where he was Assistant Director of the Ministry of Finance. Then he assumed the position of Assistant Director (the office) at the Department of Public Service. He held various positions such as Deputy Director of the Centre Contractors in the Prime Minister’s Department, Coordinator for Management Development Centre (PUSPA), Coordinator of Asian Pacific Development Centre (APDC), Administrative and Diplomatic Institute of Public administration, and Deputy Director General of the Implementation and Coordination Unit Prime Minister's Department before being appointed to be the fifth Mayor of Ipoh.

THE SIXTH CITY MAYOR

Dato 'Hasan Nawawi Abdul Rahman Bin Datuk Bandar Ipoh is the sixth mayor of Ipoh. He has served as Mayor of Ipoh from 2004 until 2006. Dato 'Hassan Nawawi was born on December 9, 1954 in Kampung Suak Petai, Manong, Kuala Kangsar, Perak, and he was the sixth of ten siblings. Dato 'Hassan Nawawi received his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Manong and next Manong SMK Sultan Tajul Ariffin and SMK Aminuddin Baki, Kuala Lumpur. Then he went on to study to the University and has earned a Bachelor's Degree in History of International Relations in 1977. He had obtained a Master Development Administration (MDA) from the University of Western Michigan in 1986. Dato 'Hassan has served as a temporary teacher in SMK Sultan Tajul Ariffin, Manong in 1974 and in SMK Dato' Idris, Pantai Remis in 1977. He has also been an Officer of the Administrative and Diplomatic Service (PTD) on 19 September 1977 at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Public Service. In addition, he also served as Administrative Officer at the District Office Manjung District Office Port Dickson. Then he was appointed as District Officer of Kuala Kangsar, Perak from 1 April 2002 before becoming mayor Ipoh in 2004. Recently Dato 'Hassan Nawawi had been appointed as the Director of the Department of Human Resources at the Department of Public Service.

THE SEVENTH CITY MAYOR

YANG BERBAHAGIA DATO' MOHAMAD RAFIAI B. HAJI MOKTAR

Dato 'Mohammed Bin Haji Mokhtar Rafiai is the seventh Mayor of Ipoh. He has served as Mayor of Ipoh from July 24th 2006 until June 6th 2008. Dato 'Mohammed Rafiai was born on June 6th 1951 in Tanjung Piandang, Perak. He has earned a BA (Hons) in Malay Studies and Sosiology / Anthropology, University of Malaya. He has worked at the Civil Service in September 1974 where he was an Assistant District Officer (Land) at the Land Office, Kuala Kangsar. Then in November 1976, he was appointed as Assistant District Officer 3 at the Kuala Kangsar District Council. On June 16, 1978, he was appointed as Assistant Director of the Perak State Economic Planning Unit. Dato 'Rafiai later assuming the position of Assistant Secretary General of the Public Housing Division on August 16, 1982 and as Chief Assistant District Officer cum District Council Speaker Kinta Selatan, Kampar on October 16, 1988. In addition, he also served as Deputy Development Officer jwatan Johor Johor State Economic Development Office, Policy Coordination Division TimbalanPengarah Implementation and Coordination Unit in the Prime Minister, the Director of Development Melaka Melaka State Development Office, Director of Social Division in the Department of Implementation and Coordination Unit Prime Minister and the Director of the Special Division Implementation and Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister. Before being elected as the Seventh Mayor of Ipoh, Dato 'Rafiai also been served as Secretary of the City Council of Ipoh and as the Perak Tengah District Officer.

THE EIGHTH CITY MAYOR

Dato 'Haji Hashim Bin Haji Roshidi is the eighth Mayor of Ipoh. He was elected as Mayor of Ipoh on 23rd July 2008. He was born on December 25th 1955 in Kg. Singkir Darat, Bidong, Kedah Darul Aman. Dato' Haji Roshidi had received his early education in the Sekolah Kebangsaan Singkir, Merbok High School, and at Bidong High School before continuing his education to the Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1993 and has earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. He has worked at the Public Service in October 1975 as a Clerical Officer in the Office of the State Government of Penang. Later he was appointed as the Assistant Investigation Officer in the Anti-Corruption Agency of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on 16th November 1978. He held various positions such as Assistant Secretary of the Government Procurement Management Division at the Ministry of Finance Malaysia, Assistant Director of the Economic Planning Unit in the Office of the State Secretary, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Perak, Special Secretary to Chief Minister of Perak and as Secretary of the City Council Ipoh before he was elected as the Eighth Mayor of Ipoh City. Dato’ Haji Roshidi  is aggressive and sensitive to the problems faced by the people of Ipoh City. He has introduced policies that led the Council to the economic planning for the Ipoh City. He also has attracted investors from various sectors to invest in Ipoh. He also established Revenue Increase Policy, led the opening moving counters in housing area, and the opening of community halls for public use. Dato 'Haji Roshidi is strict and disciplined in carrying out the task entrusted to him. He therefore has set to the field on every Wednesday to review the areas in the City of Ipoh which to be addressed immediately. He will also bring the City Council officers together with him to review the city.
